I've Got a Sinking Feeling...
Look, we gotta talk. ll Finn and Lucii

He wasn’t sure how long he had been staring at the ceiling, but if it weren’t for the silence he would never have heard the knock at the door. He had been running through the types of edible foods in his mind. Belladonna, poisonous, but looks like blueberries. With his appetite, he would have to know exactly what he could eat and what could eat him. Swinging his legs over the bed, he started for the door. The past few days had been a blur of training, practicing, interviewing, prepping, being plucked and primped to be the prettiest he could when he died. He hadn’t done much socializing because he was instead sleeping.

He wrapped a now significantly stronger hand around the door handle and wrenched it open, pulling it wide to see if perhaps the Avox he had asked to bring him dinner was back yet. Instead, he saw the girl he had spent his time trying to find, the one who had somehow managed to elude him at every dinner and during every training session.

He blinked. “…Lucii?”

Right at the sight of him, she could feel her eyes get soft. There was this lingering feeling of love in the air. It was not unwanted though. Something told her she needed to break whatever they had quickly, or she might not do it. Love was tricky for Lucii, and she wanted Finn to win the games. She knew he would only save her if it came down to them, and the careers. It was only a few hours from the games, she was doing this last minute. Her new hair color bothered her, but she pushed thoughts about what he might think of it behind her.

“Yes, it is me.” Lucii said in the most formal matter she could, letting her eyes return to the state they were before he had opened the door. “I have come to tell you, I do not wish to have an alliance in the arena. Bringing you down is something I will not do.” Lucii then turned, unable to meet his eyes any longer. She began to walk down the hallway, with her chin high. This had to be done. She reassured herself, yet there was a hole in her heart.

Finn stopped for a moment, going through in his head what she had just said. No alliance…not kill him…he hadn’t spoken to anyone in so long that he was having trouble remembering how to talk. But when he registered her walking back down the hallway, he ran to catch up to her. “Lucii, what are you doing?” When he reaches her, he rememorizes her features. Her hair was different now; he wasn’t sure how he felt about it. She wasn’t looking at him.

"You say you don’t want an alliance, but you won’t bring me down. Isn’t refusing to kill me the same thing as being in an alliance? Where’s this coming from? And more importantly, where are you coming from? I haven’t seen you in days, even when I tried to see you. A few days ago, I was spending every day with you. What’s changed? You tell me you don’t want an alliance, but then you refuse to kill me. If you don’t want anything to do with me, if you’re done with me, fine. But I’d at least like an explanation before you just walk off and act like we’ve never met.” No matter what the outcome of this conversation, Finneas wasn’t planning to be left back behind the rest of them.

Lucii paced her room, she didn’t want to bring Finn down in the games. she could help him, but she didn’t want to take the chance of a spoken alliance. She had been avoiding his really. Trying to keep away, and not back down on her decision. It was starting to get to her. Everything was. It had dawned on her a few days ago that the games were right around the corner. She was really good with a bow now, and decent with knives. Intelligent was another term that could describe her now. She planned on helping others with hint in the arena. Lucii might not live, but she wanted to help those who had a good chance of winning. It was a simple principle.

She exited her room, and made her way to Finn’s. She needed to break this off for now. Maybe it would change, but she couldn’t do this. When she knocked lightly o the door, her face was vacant. No emotion could be showed, or he might see right through her act.

No you’re not! :o

But guys…this is literally my favorite picture of Callan, ever.

Sounds good. But what if, just for the sake of the argument, you die before I do? Does that mean I’m gonna have to kill someone for you too? It’ll be hard enough killing Cade, that batshit crazy sonofabitch.

I’ll take you up on that. Don’t think I’ll hesitate, either. It’s not often I get to hold something over someone else.

Thats a joke right? I’m not going to die before you, Fifi. A career from the highest district is not going to die before a mere district three tribute. Lets say I did.. You wouldn’t make it very much longer, so don’t even try to kill Cade. All hope is lost in that situation, at least for you.

Oh, have fun with that. I’ll be the one laughing when I get crowned victor.

Idid say for the sake of the argument. And as stupid as you think I am, I’m not stupid enough to go up against Cade by myself. Eh, I’ll let Adam or Onyx go at him. Those three can keep each other occupied.

Fifi?

Well, you may be smarter than I thought. I’m genuinely impressed.

Yes, you heard me correctly. Finneas is too hard and awkward to say.

Well, that’s what I’m here for, making sure I impress the right people. Great, now I feel like one of those Capitolites’ poodles. Just stick a flower in my hair and I’m practically halfway there.

Hm, really? I was just throwing out some examples.

Just make sure the hunter doesn’t become the hunted. Cliche as it sounds, it happens every year. A Career favorite kills a couple people, gets arrogant, goes after someone and gets killed in the process. I’m just hoping it isn’t you, because that’s just one more chance certain other Careers have of winning.

Its okay, I promise. I will not die stupidly. I won’t die in the first place if that helps. I’m not stupid, I know what I’m doing. I’m planning on getting in, making a few clean, quick kills, leaving the rest to the lesser tributes, and getting out.

Fantastic, it sounds like you have the whole thing planned out. Because if Cade wins I swear I will come back from the dead just to kill him. I don’t even care if the Gamemakers get mad. Long as he ends up like the other twenty-three I’m not too concerned with who wins.

But say you do die stupidly. Then what, do I just have the bragging rights of being able to say ‘I told you so’ wherever we end up?

I’ll make you a deal. When you die, I’ll make sure to kill Cade, if I haven’t already slit his throat out of annoyance. Sound good, Three? Sounds a bit more plausible than coming back to life.

If I do die stupidly, which I won’t, yes. You may rub my failure in my face as much as you want. I’m saying that with the assurance that I won’t die.

Well thank god. I’d rather die in the first five minutes than listen to the other Careers talk so loud they scare the food away. You’d think they’d want to be quiet so we can’t all hear them.

A nasty fight? Are you serious? I’ve seen tributes accidentally kill themselves falling off of cliff sides and breaking their own necks. I mean, hopefully I’m not taht ridiculously stupid, but I think you’re on a different level than that.

Well, we may be loud, but somehow other tributes still don’t hear us coming. I don’t know how stupid all of you are, you don’t seem to be hiding either. Starting a fire or leaving a trail of footprints is just as bad as screaming.

image

When was the last time you saw a career kill themselves on accident? It’s not common. We are trained to avoid anything that has a chance to injure us. Your type of tribute, on the other hand..

Mytype of tribute?

Look, some of the tributes like me are stupid, I’ll give you that. But a little bit of common sense goes a long way. Like the common sense that you don’t start a fire in the middle of the night. Or you don’t team up with Careers, because they’ll just rip your throat out in your sleep.

But then, once it gets down to it, all the Careers are just like us. When you’re on the same level as everyone else, after the rest of us non-Careers are gone, you’re all going to make stupid mistakes, and all of you but one are gonna die because of them.

Well, say you actually had that common sense. Good. You may last through the first night. Maybe even the first day. The careers know when to break up, I’m not stupid enough to let them kill me. Yeah, a few careers always get stabbed in the back, but Some tributes know to never trust them more than you would trust a tribute from.. For example.. District three.

All of them will die but one. Every tribute but me. You see, Finneas.. All the normal tributes are automatically out of the running, with me in the arena. I’m slowly learning every weakness of the careers, so that I can take advantage of them. Everyone has a weakness, you just have to get to know what it is, then you can use it against them. Some it may be a person, some it can be an insecurity. Anything can be turned against someone.

Right, anything. Someone’s feelings for someone else. Their lack of an attention span. Their arrogance.

You see, Sparkle, as much as I’d like to believe that, I really wouldn’t. You’ll be in an arena you can’t be familiar with, it’ll be enormous, and as long as I keep my head down and do what I know, I’ll live a few days. You’ll have to find people to kill, kill them, keep yourself alive. Not to mention the few Careers who willteam up, kill the ones who threaten them. So even if you do win the Games, it won’t be easy. Yours is an uphill battle.

I have a feeling you’re directing that at someone..

Yes, I’m aware. But i’ve trained for anything and everything. I’ve trained to hunt down one person, no matter how far away they are. The arena doesn’t last forever. They’ll drive two people together. They will make sure only one makes it out. And I know it won’t be easy. It never is. But I didn’t prepare for it to be easy. I won’t get knocked down by anything they throw at me.
